Chapter 13·The Coaching Gap
The Wheel of Coaching
Zoom in to do the work. Zoom out to make sure it's the right work.
THE WHEEL OF COACHING
Balance is not the goal.
If you're the best in the world at something, your wheel is not round. It can't be. A slice that sits low because you decided, eyes open, is a choice, and you can live with a choice.
Not imbalance. Regret.
What you can't live with is a part of your life that went quiet while you weren't paying attention. The wheel protects you from that.
Promoted out of your best slice.
You were hired for the game. The wheel shows what else is now yours, and the self is the one slice you can't afford to lose, because everything runs through you.
HOW TO USE IT
SCORE IT
Slice by slice, one to ten. Your number, today. The number isn't the point. The pause is.
CHOOSE WHAT TO FEED
Not automatically the lowest slice. Maybe the nine you love goes to a ten on purpose, and a low slice stays low, chosen.
REDRAW IT
The wheel is adjustable. If your reality looks different, change any slice until it is yours.
“Zoom in to do the work. Zoom out to make sure it's the right work.”
One thing to try
Draw both wheels this week. Thirty minutes, one page each. Then pick one slice and tell somebody what you chose, because a choice said out loud is harder to lose.
