Chapter 3·The Coaching Gap
Being and Doing
The being shapes the doing. Not the other way around.
ABOVE AND BELOW THE LINE
THE DOING
The role, the method, the system, the results. The work, the reaching, the effort. What everyone sees and counts.
THE BEING
The energy you carry. What you feel inside. You cannot fake it, and it shows up before you say a word. The quality of presence that stays after you leave.
It lives in the body first.
Not a mindset, not a decision. Something you access and feel.
Same gym, two coaches.
One obsessed with the next win is doing. One fully present with every athlete is being.
Did you choose your words?
Joyful, curious, bold, alive. Or serious, guarded, busy, hard, handed to you one hard season at a time.
At every level
Youth
A kid makes a mistake. The next five seconds are about who you are, not what you say.
Elite & College
Grounded protects you from the drift: becoming harder, more transactional, more guarded.
Pro
The machine runs all day. The anchor is a person who shows up the same on the hardest days.
“It starts in the quiet, in the pause, in the decision to know who you are before the world tells you who to be.”
One thing to try
Name your three being words. Then design one return: a morning practice, a question before you walk into the building, a person who tells you when you have drifted.
