Chapter 11·The Coaching Gap
Learning and Actions
Not sincerity. A system.
THE RETURN · A MEETING ON A RHYTHM
Two documents on the table.
The preseason values and the last commitment, read out loud. Without the anchor, the room talks about the last two weeks, because the last two weeks are the loudest thing in it.
Three questions.
What did we learn. What did we like. What do we want to remember. A season produces information constantly, and almost none of it gets kept.
When the answer is no.
Judgment gets you explanations. Curiosity gets you the truth. Real actions quietly die within days, and noticing is the entire reason the meeting exists.
THE NINE-OUT-OF-TEN TEST
Before the conversation ends: on a scale of one to ten, what are the odds you actually do this? Anything below a nine, make it smaller, sooner, or attach it to something already on the calendar. A seven, thirty seconds after deciding, is the part of you that already knows.
“You adjust the plan, not the willpower.”
One thing to try
The next time someone commits to a plan, ask: one to ten, what are the odds you actually do this? Then watch their face, because the answer is usually on it before they say a number.
