Chapter 4·The Coaching Gap
Powerful Questions
Change begins not in answers. In questions.
TWO DOORS
WHY...? / DO YOU...?
The verdict is already inside the question. It wakes the defense lawyer, or sends them into memory. Answering, defending, explaining.
THE DOOR CLOSES
WHAT...? / HOW...?
No predetermined answer. "I genuinely do not know what you will say, and I am curious to find out." Noticing, feeling, discovering.
THE DOOR OPENS
Then three words.
After they answer, pause. Say: tell me more. They stop defending and start exploring.
The powerful question comes last.
Asked cold, it is just a weird question. Anchored in listening and real connection, it stops someone. "Your future self, five years from now, is looking back at this season. What is he saying to you right now?"
Why it works.
Kahneman's two systems. The automatic answer is System 1, where the saboteur lives. A powerful question switches on System 2, and in that pause, something shifts.
At every level
Youth
The bench hears your question too. One question teaches a whole team to defend, or to discover.
Elite & College
Old stories, hardened. Open questions first, connection, then the question that reaches further.
Pro
Patterns live in the nervous system. The question reaches the gap between how the team sees him and how he sees himself.
“A powerful question asked cold is just a weird question.”
One thing to try
This week, trade one why for a what or a how. "What did you see in that moment?" Then pause, and say: tell me more.
